about

Final label stock. A 2007 CD reissue of Yoshi Wada's most important and most rare LP, “Lament for the Rise and Fall of the Elephantine Crocodile”, originally released in 1982 on the India Navigation label. Yoshi Wada is a Japanese sound installation artist and musician, who moved to New York in the late 1960s, and became well-known as a Fluxus artist with links to George Maciunas and La Monte Young, and has been involved in many performances and sound installations.

This album was recorded in 1981 at the Dry Pool, a facility at Media Study in Buffalo, NY. The Dry Pool is literally an empty pool, with an acoustic characteristic that Wada described as a "sound drag" that creates a tremendous reverberation that seems to come up from the depths of the earth, and "Lament for..." was produced completely acoustically, without any mechanical delay or echo.

This CD contains two pieces: track 1 "Singing" is a solo improvised voice performance using vocal techniques learned from Pandit Pran Nath. Track 2 "Bagpipe" is a performance on his modified instrument, which Wada developed after studying the playing style and structure of the Scottish bagpipes. The instrument named "Elephantine Crocodile" is tuned in just intonation to avoid overtone and emits maddening masses of sound.
